The creative economy is more than a buzzword—it’s a driving force behind economic growth, community resilience, and cultural transformation across California. At CLTRE, we’re passionate about advocating for a creative economy that’s inclusive, accessible, and impactful. Recently, our own Executive Director, Roshaun Davis, was invited to speak at the Creative Economy Working Group of California—an event hosted by the California Arts Council and the Institute for the Future. This was more than just a speaking engagement; it was a chance to be part of critical conversations about the role of the creative economy in shaping California’s future. At the end of the working group meetings, they will deliver the strategic plan for the creative economy for California to the governors office to be adopted at a state level.
What is the Creative Economy?
The creative economy encompasses industries where creativity and innovation are the primary drivers—arts, design, technology, media, and more. In California, these sectors contribute significantly to economic growth, employing thousands of people and generating billions in revenue. But the true value goes beyond numbers. It’s about culture, community, and the power to bring people together.
For Roshaun, the invitation to share his experiences as a creative who has built businesses, communities, and real estate through his creativity was a powerful reminder of why representation in these spaces matters. “If you have the opportunity to be in the rooms that are shaping the future, then you should be in those rooms to advocate for yourself and others,” he shared with the audience. Being part of these conversations is how we create real, sustainable change.
The Role of Creative Leaders in California’s Future
California’s creative economy is not just a collection of industries—it’s a vibrant ecosystem shaped by the people within it. Creative leaders like Roshaun play a pivotal role in shaping this ecosystem, using their insights and experiences to advocate for policies and initiatives that prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion. These values aren’t just ideals; they’re the foundation of a thriving, resilient creative economy.
At the Working Group meeting in San Juan Bautista, Roshaun joined familiar faces and new voices from across California, all gathered to discuss how the creative economy can address the unique challenges facing our communities. Sharing his insights on using creativity to drive community development, he emphasized the need to include more diverse voices in decision-making spaces.
“Hopefully, me sharing my experience will express the importance of including us in spaces,” he said. For him, being at the table isn’t just an opportunity—it’s a responsibility to advocate for a future that works for everyone.
The Impact of the Creative Economy on Community Development
Creative industries have the power to transform communities by generating jobs, inspiring local culture, and creating spaces that reflect the unique identity of a place. When these industries thrive, communities thrive. At CLTRE, we’ve seen firsthand how creative projects can drive economic development. From supporting local entrepreneurs to investing in real estate projects that reflect community values, we’re committed to building in a way that’s accessible to all Californians.
Why Inclusion Matters
Inclusion isn’t just about representation—it’s about making sure everyone has a stake in the future we’re building. The creative economy should be a place where voices from diverse backgrounds can shape the direction of our communities. For Roshaun and other creative leaders, being invited to speak at events is about more than sharing ideas. It’s a chance to advocate for policies and programs that ensure the creative economy remains inclusive and equitable.
When we make space for diverse perspectives, we enrich our communities and strengthen the creative economy. The event highlights the importance of including voices that have historically been left out, ensuring that California’s creative economy reflects the diverse and vibrant communities it serves.
Looking Ahead: Shifting Culture by 2040
At CLTRE, our vision is to shift the cultural landscape of California by 2040. This isn’t a vision we can achieve alone—it requires collaboration, advocacy, and the collective effort of creatives, community leaders, and policymakers.
As we look to the future, CLTRE remains committed to creating spaces where we can all flourish. By empowering creatives, supporting local businesses, and advocating for inclusive policies, we’re building a foundation for a future where creativity, culture, and community intersect to create lasting impact.
Join us on this journey. Together, let’s shape the future and shift the cultural landscape of California by the year 2040.
