At CLTRE, we’re dedicated to empowering creative entrepreneurs and advancing the growth of California’s creative economy. Recently, we had the privilege of joining Deputy Treasurer Khaim Morton at the California State Treasurer’s Office for an insightful conversation focused on enhancing access to capital for creative businesses across the state. This gathering brought together leaders, advocates, and innovators, all committed to creating a financial ecosystem that supports California’s diverse creative community.
Spotlight on Creative Entrepreneurship
The discussion was filled with inspiring insights and stories from individuals at the forefront of the creative economy. Maria Medrano, a past participant in our EveryDay Creative program, shared her journey as a creative entrepreneur, highlighting the challenges she has overcome and the impact of accessible capital on her business growth. Her story underscored the unique financial needs of creatives and the importance of targeted funding opportunities.
Alice Loy, one of our valued partners, contributed her expertise on venture capital trends and alternative funding models that are better suited to creative businesses. She emphasized how the creative sector often falls outside traditional funding models, yet is rich with potential. Alice’s insights sparked a vital dialogue on reshaping financial structures to better serve the needs of creative entrepreneurs.
Our own Roshaun Davis, Executive Director of CLTRE, added his perspective on the importance of equitable access to resources for creatives from underserved communities. Together with Jason Jong – Cultural and Creative Economy Manager of the City of Sacramento, Danielle Brazell – Executive Director of the California Arts Council, and Mikel Davila – Senior Development Project Manager at City of Sacramento Office of Innovation and Economic Development, Roshaun explored new partnerships and tools that could help level the playing field for all creatives in California.
The Public Sector’s Role in Advancing Access to Capital
One of the most impactful takeaways from this gathering was the role the public sector can play in advancing access to capital for creative entrepreneurs. Deputy Treasurer Khaim Morton shared insights on how California’s government can be a key supporter in this effort, championing solutions that create a more inclusive economic landscape. It was inspiring to witness the public sector’s commitment to addressing the financial challenges faced by creatives statewide.
By fostering partnerships between government, financial institutions, and community organizations, we can create funding pathways that prioritize accessibility and inclusivity. This collaboration is essential for empowering creatives to bring their visions to life, contribute to California’s cultural economy, and build long-lasting impact.
Moving Forward: Building Momentum in California’s Creative Economy
This conversation is just the beginning. At CLTRE, we’re excited to build on the ideas shared and partner with key players and advocates to drive real change in California’s creative economy. By enhancing access to capital, we can fuel growth for creatives who enrich our communities and shape the cultural landscape of California.
A special thank you to Megan Van Voorhis for organizing this conversation and bringing together such an inspiring group of leaders. We’re grateful to Deputy Treasurer Khaim Morton for his commitment to organizing this think tank on capital access and for his dedication to advancing economic opportunity within California’s creative economy.
Looking Ahead
The creative economy holds immense potential for innovation, economic growth, and cultural enrichment. Yet without equitable access to capital, many creative entrepreneurs face barriers that prevent them from achieving their potential. At CLTRE, we remain committed to advocating for accessible funding solutions and fostering collaborations that drive meaningful change.
As we continue this journey with our partners, we’re excited to see where this conversation leads. By advancing access to capital, we can help build a creative economy where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Together, let’s unlock a future filled with opportunities for California’s creative economy.
